Detecting repeat locations
What is the Repeat Location Finder (RLFinder)?
RLFinder is an add-on program for MapInfo, written in MapBasic. The rationale of the program is the current body of research that says tackling repeat victimisation in an effective method of crime prevention. The first part in tackling repeat victimisation is identifying it. This program will search through all records that have a geocoded point (i.e. not with co-ordinates of 0,0) and create a new table containing only those locations that have more that one object centred on them i.e. the repeat incidents. The program also gives the user an option of a summary table, that only contains the x co-ordinate, y co-ordinate and the number of incidents recorded at that location. Note that when the program is run, the user is given the option of installing the menu items either on the main menu bar, or as a sub menu of the tools menu item.

What is the Scrubber?
A scrubber is a type of program that removes unwanted text from an address field. Often address fields contain additional text that can corrupt a geocoder's attempt to find a match. This program has a number of rules that the user can choose to apply (or not), and then it creates a new column of addresses that have been scrubbed. For example, if you select the rule to ignore all text before the first number, the scrubber would take an entry such as "outside 24 Smith Street" and generate a scrubbed address of "24 Smith Street".The program also contains a MapInfo table that the user can adapt to their own geocoding problems. This table can be set up so that every instance of "Str" can be automatically changes to "St" or "Street". This is useful for commonly misspelt names: every instance of "Wolongong" can be corrected to "Wollongong" (good Aussie example there!!).
To install, simply unzip the contents of the zip file into one folder and run the MBX program. The other files and tables in the zip file must be kept in the same folder as the MBX for the program to correctly function. This program will install itself in the main menu bar. It is one component of the Hotspot Detective suite of programs.
See the progam help for more information and how to use the program (note that the help is taken from within Hotspot Detective and therefore the icon buttons are not available).
